Well, one thing to remember, OL97 is very old, unsupported, was buggy at
release, and doesn't understand that fancy newfangled HTML mail that's all
the rage with the kids today. If you have the option to use OL2003 (or 2002)
do it.
That said: control panel | internet options | programs. Pick the default
mail client there.

You set your default email client via the Programs tab in Internet Explorer
properties. To use Outlook 97 with Internet accounts you need the Internet
Mail Enhancement Patch. I'm not sure if that is still available. To be
honest, considering the age of Outlook 97, its very limited function and
lack of support - I'd stick with Outlook Express.
