Hi Gurus

I have just got a new internet connection, using a modem that connects
via a USB port (creating a second "local area network") to the
internet. My local area cable is connected to a hub and I want some
other computers to connect to the internet using this hub.

This means I

a. have to buy a router
b. use my main PC as a gateway or router.

Can anyone tell me how I can do this.

I use windows XP on all my computers.

Thank you

Nicolaas

I use and have installed D-Link routers and they have been excellent.
Use the D-Link Network Configuarator to spec your exact requirements:

No. That's to connect the hub to another hub......

Hi Gorden

Thank you for your help. Do you know if there is a way to give my other
computers access to the internet - as described above. I have been
searching Google all over and I dont seem to find any answer. With my
old modem (which did not use a static IP address, just a USB cable),
this was not a problem at all and I find it hard to believe that I can
not turn one of my computers into a "virtual router".

Thank you

You certainly should be able to use ICS (Internet Connection Sharing)
over the network. (Not what I would recommend as it CAN be a bit tricky
both to set up and to trouble-shoot if it goes wrong later...)

Take a look here. (Have a look at the top two links first....)

OK, I did it.... Here is the trick

1. create second local area network which connects modem to PC
2. run network setup wizard on PC and Laptop. The PC should connect
directly to the internet, the Laptop should connect through other
computer
3. PC and laptop should have been connected through hub (not router)
4. PC settings for local area network (the network that connects with
Laptop, not modem):
IP 192.168.0.1
subnet 255.255.255.0
gateway blank
DNS: blank

5. Laptop settings for LAN:
IP 192.168.0.2
subnet 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.0.1
DNS: same as those for modem network

Hope that helps

Cheers

Nicolaas
