Internet Gateway?

Menno Hershberger

I just happened to be looking in my Network Connections and see that I now
have a new connection called Internet Gateway. Properties says it allows me
to connect to the internet through another computer with a shared
connection. For at least a year all my computers have been connected to a
router. I lost one port on my Linksys Router quite some time ago, and
Sunday I replaced it with a D-Link D1-604. The only configuring I had to do
was set up routing to my computer that has my webserver, email server, and
FTP server. Same as the Linksys had been, just a different interface.
Everything worked fine right from the start and still is. I never got any
messages saying a new connection was being created. My Local Area
Connection is still there and both it and the new "Gateway" say they are
connected. What is it? Anything I should be concerned about?

Evidently it has something to do with the router. It's "status" says
it's been connected for 3 days and 17 hours, which is about the time when
I hooked up the new router. I tried to disable it just to see what would
happen, but it won't disable. I guess I'll just quit worrying about it.
The article you referred me to mentioned something about UPnP, but I
don't think that's installed. I've got that port blocked anyway.

That is probably why it won't disable.
