Fresh install of XP Pro SP2 (Retail) and no I'm being forced to login with
password etc, given I'm only user on that machine I just want to boot
straight into the desktop, any tips on how to do this or is tweakui the only
option?

TIA

Go to Start -> Run.
Copy and paste the following into the Open box:

control userpasswords2

Click OK.
In the "Users for this computer" box, click on the account you
want to have logged on automatically.
Uncheck "Users must enter a user name and password to use this
computer".
Click OK.
In the box that pops up, make sure the account you clicked on
earlier is entered next to User Name.
Enter your password twice.
Note: You can leave the password box blank if the account does
not have a password.
Click OK.
Reboot to see if you get the desired results.

If you prefer, you can download a Microsoft program called
TweakUI and configure it accordingly. Take a look here for more
info on that procedure:

That's not a particularly wise practice, from a security perspective,
unless you're 100% positive that no one else will ever have physical
access to your computer, but it's your data. Here's how:

Search using Google!
http://www.google.com/
(How-to: http://www.google.com/intl/en/help/basics.html )

Consider it carefully. From a security standpoint, it's like leaving your
door wide open all day - every day.

Microsoft method:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315231

Microsoft Method 2:
TweakUI from:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

control userpasswords2 method:
1) Go to the Start Menu and the Run box.
2) Type in the following:

control userpasswords2

now click OK
3) In the new Windows that appears select the account you wish to make the
primary logon.
Now uncheck the "Users must enter a username and password..." box.
4) Hit Apply and a dialog box will appear asking you to confirm the selected
users password.
Click OK when you are done...

Thanks guys for your replies, I can be 100% certain I'll be only person
using machine, I have gone down the TweakUI route as I'll use that for other
things as well, so thanks for all your help.

*grin*
100% certain.

Ever seen a Discovery Channel show called "To catch a thief"?
I thought it was very wise of them to show once or twice that you should
password protect your computer.

It won't keep the system from being stolen, and may not necessarily keep the
data on it safe once it leaves your possession and someone has *more time*
with it... But - it is a deterrent that is effective for those 'not in the
know' on how to quickly bypass such things and could (at least gives a
better chance) could stop someone from finding things about you or others
you have stored on that system. Identity theft sucks. It only takes a
minute - and you have given them more time by the computer just
'automatically logging in'. Now they don't have to know anything to get
everything.

Maybe I am over-reacting. Perhaps your computer is indeed safe from
everything that could happen. Perhaps you have some reason to have a
password set, but not use it. I don't know.
