I want to bullet by number (1, 2, 3), then sub-bullet by letter

this is a simple question, compared to those displayed when i posted
originally! But, i just want to reset my computer so that as i write an
outline (numbered 1, 2, 3), i can insert sub-headings (a, b, c) etc.
1. Here is the first subject.
a. Here is the sub heading
2. Here is the second subject.
a. Here is the sub heading.
b. Here is the second sub heading
