I want to bold a word by typing CTRL-B while my cursor is in that.

I've been doing a handy operation: When my cursor is resting in a word, I
can use a character formatting shortcut to change the word, e.g., CTRL-B to
make the word bold.
I now find this functionality has ceased; the cursor changes it's "look" and
subsequent typed characters have the formatting attribute--but it doesn't
change the word, as it used to.
I like that feature, and don't know why it went away.
What can I do to get it back?

You might try checking the option for "When selecting, automatically select
entire word" on the Edit tab of Tools | Options. I also miss this feature.
