I type 1 in excel but input returned is 2

When typing the number 1 in excel spreadsheet cell, any cell, the number 1
changes to number 2 when return is pressed.

The also occurs in word documents.

Office 2000 has been removed from system and re installed but problem still
exists. Any Ideas.

Tools, autocorrect options, find the 1 in the list and remove it.
