I have some old CD-R disks on to which I copied various files for Back-up
purposes

They are no longer needed,as I have all my Back-up now on CD-RW disks.

Before disposing of the CD-R disks I want to clear all the info.

I have tried deleting several ways , including formating, but always get a
denial message,stating that they are Read only

I have tried to change the attributes by un-ticking Read only, but cannot
get any further, same message re-appears.

What am I doing wrong, or not doing?

CD-R can not have the data cleared off. This type of media is Write-Once
only. If you wish to "destroy" the data on the disks, destroy disks (break
them into little pieces).

Be careful, the CD plastic (??) will become jagged and sharp.

Indeed. I normally choose to scratch the living heck out of CDs instead of
actually breaking them. As long as the scratches are deep enough, this
should be good enough, I think.

I read somewhere that if you put them in the microwave oven for a few mins
they make a good show. (But don't blame me if you damage the microwave).

What I do with confidential CDs is to take a pair of heavy duty shears
('tin snips') and make a radial cut in from one side. They are not
going to be readable after that

Regular scissors work pretty well, too - but go slow.
