I screwed up my IE6 SP1 for XP Home Edition

I screwed up IE6 SP1 on Windows XP Home edition. I screwed
it up very well at that, too.

I was messing around with my computer registry. I know,
never a good idea. So I backed it up, first. Well, I
thought I backed it up, first, turns out that I had only
backed up a very small portion of it.

So, after I thought I had backed up the registry, I
proceeded to mess with the settings. In doing so, I must
have made some bad choices concerning internet Explorer.
Ever since I did that, I am unable to surf at all using IE.
I can surf all I want using netscape. And I can even open
Windows explorer, and when I enter web addresses into the
addres bar, I am able to surf using Windows explorer. Just
not IE.

I have tried to uninstall and re-install IE, but that
hasn't helped, either.

Any advice would be greatly appreciate.

Thanks

Joe

<sigh> Define 'messing around'. What did you change? Did you keep records?

LOL Yeah, I know, sigh

Well, actually, isn't wasn't me that screwed it up - was
someone else. And so I don't know exactly what he did.
So, I figure I could be in a heap of trouble. But thought
if anyone could help me, should be the folks here :) And
if they can't, I haven't really lost anything by asking.

Well homey, got 2 try this one,it works with files from
IE6,It's called the Avant browser, when you load it it
loads the same files from IE6 that may be corrupt 4 U,go
to www.download.com search for avant browser on
that page(It's FREE),load it,it's just like IE6 but
larger viewing area, and comes with pop-up blocker
too, which you can disable from the toolbar,if you'ld like
to.Give it a try,may put the settings back for IE6 to be
where you need them 2 B.If it don't,then you have an
extra browser, cuz netscap just plain sucks!I like 2 pimp
my box(computer),like X-ibite likes 2 pimp people's ride!
Good Luck,and enjoy,God Bless.

Ok, perhaps the advice below will help:

For advice specific to problems with secure sites, have a look at the first
link - for general advice, have a look at the second:

Thanks for the idea. Unfortunately, that didn't work,
either. In fact, my IE6 problems occured with Avant, too,
so I can't use that either.

I think you should treat your problem as you would if you suspected
you had a case of malware. E.g. do all the scans, get all the lists of
abnormalities and then either fix things which are obviously wrong or
use that documentation for further troubleshooting.

Normally (pre-malware) we would suggest an IE Repair.
That option doesn't even exist for most XP users any more
but in case it helps here is what I usually suggest to them
as a simulation. You can find longer lists from others
by searching this newsgroup.

If you installed IE6sp1 before you installed XPsp1 you should try
an IE Repair anyway. E.g. Run... (press Win-R and enter:)

rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance

Alternatively, I have been suggesting to XP users that they could simulate
the IE Repair that W2K users can do by making a list of all the references
to DllInstall and DllRegisterServer in FixIE.inf

For example, here is the list that W2K use of that file would imply:
(excerpt from previous post)

<excerpt>
regsvr32 /i browseui.dll
regsvr32 /i shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 /i mshtml.dll
regsvr32 mshtmled.dll
regsvr32 actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 /i urlmon.dll

What that represents is the set of re-registrations which
FixIE.inf indicates would be done for Base.W2K.AddReg

N.B. that neither mshtmled.dll nor actxprxy.dll have an entry point
called DllInstall and hence the /i option can not be used for them.

Neither msjava.dll nor shell32.dll are referred to by FixIE.inf
but those are two other modules which are often suggested to XP users
as needing re-registration for repairing in various circumstances.

Note that such re-registrations are normally done by an IE Repair
during a boot while nothing is running so at the very least I think
that it would be best to ensure that iexplore.exe is not active in your
task list. (Close all visible IE windows and then check that the
iexplore.exe is not in the list of Processes in Task Manager.
Ctrl-Shift-Esc,Ctrl-Tab,i,i,...)
</excerpt>

....
Using this?

<title>KB318378 - How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP</title>

The instructions don't make it very clear what is supposed to happen
regarding additional maintenance but enough people seem to have
used this procedure that I guess it is not as much of an issue as I had
once feared. If you did this please tell us if setupwbv.dll gets installed
as it would mean that an IE Repair for XP users is more feasible than
currently thought.

Good luck
