I/O error - Bad Sectors - Recovery? Windows Hangs - Maxtor OneTouch 250GB

D

davidmcmaxii

Good Morning All,

Does anyone have any advice regarding I/O errors and how to rescue a
folder on a hard disk?

I purchased a Maxtor Onetouch 250Gb drive just before christmas to hold

my music collection and to act as a drive for audio recording. The
other night everything froze as I was recording to it. I waited for at
least 30 mins for the pc to unfreeze and then restarted the pc. Now
when the drive is connected to the pc everything seems to start and run

more slowly. The drive is split into 3 partitions. 100/100/33Gb. All
three show up as installed and I can access 2 of the partitions files
with no problems. But when I try to access the "my music" folder in one

of the 100Gb partitions the computer hangs for a couple of minutes and
then an error message appears saying there was an I/O error. What is
this? IS this fatal? I have backed up at regular intervals but there is

3 weeks of data still on the drive which is crucial to me!

I ran chkdsk /f and it identified about 35 bad sectors on the partition

but when it came to rectifying the indexes [indices!!] it said that "an

unspecified error occurred" and stopped chkdsk.

I am very confused here. In January I had a problem with the drive in
that all the partitions appeared empty. I used some recovery software
and it found 99% of the files. This problem I had attributed to the
1394 interface I was using [soundblaster audigy] and that the drive had

nothing to do with it. I switched to usb 2.0 interface which I am
currently using - not ideal given the slightly higher cpu usage when
recording. But is has been relatively stable since then.

Is this drive recoverable? Can the "my music" folder be opened? I tried

data recovery software on the drive and it hung whilst trying to
analyse the folder structure. I am guessing that the long delays and
hangs are due to windows trying (in vain) to communicate with the drive

but then again I'm no computer whiz so it could be due to the phase of
the moon or the humidity in Bhutan.

So I/O error on a 50Gb folder in a 100Gb partition when the rest of the

drive seems to be fine(ish). 35 or so bad sectors. Am I furious or
what?

I would appreciate your views and any constructive advice.

Yours sincerely

Hi Dave,

what model maxtor drive is in the onetouch? And what data recovery
software did you try?

I have no idea... Must ask Maxtor.

The recovery software I used was "recover my files". It worked very
well recovering a 55Gb partition before...

Cheers for reply.

Hi,

It does not look desperate to me, but having bad sectors on a brand new
drive is no good ! You should have made it changed the first time by maxtor.

I experienced on customers drives ( not maxtor ) same pbs
First thing to do would be to back up what is accessible to you...u never
know how long the drive will last.

Then, I would suggest to scan the drive with your data recovery software
without scanning the TOC which apparently is dead. Trying to access it can
slow down the recovery or make it fail.
What kind of files extension are your files ? Is that mp3 or more
sophisticated like protools ?

If you cannot retrieve any data back, let me know. We will see what we can
do ?

Now that I have had the time to think about his advice I realise that
he was possibly referring to the FAT... I'm not sure if it is a FAT
problem. That's what happened to my disk last time and the partition
recover utility worked fine. I think it's a case of the bad sectors
halting windows as it attempts to read and re-read the sectors.

Or perhaps the hamsters which power my pc are slowing down. Must re-oil
their exercise wheel and feed them better straw...

Thanks for your advice!

Are you sure you have 48bit LBA enabled? Take a look at www.48bitlba.com

Now that I have had the time to think about his advice I realise that

Actually, TOC (Table Of Contents) is the directory of a CD-type disk.
I'm not sure if it is a FAT problem.

I think it's a case of the bad sectors halting windows as it attempts to

Yup, that's what I think too.

I would blame it on faulty IDE->1394 bridge firmware that does not support
BigLBA (disks over 137 GB).

And like most topposters you obviously didn't read the post:
"Maxtor OneTouch 250GB"

And since when does the 137GB foldback cause bad sectors and I/O errors.

Clueless, as usual. That only applies to internal IDE harddrives.

Even though the OP appears to have bought the drive "off the shelf" with
a 250GB drive installed?
