My hard drive went out which had Windows XP Home Edition
installed when I purchased my PC (HP Pavilion 7915).
(Fujitsu Class Action Law-Suit in progress).

I purchased a new Hard Drive because I can't wait to see
what happens with the lawsuit. I need to install Windows
XP on it, but I don't feel I should have to go out and
buy a new copy as I have already purchased when I bought
my computer.

QUESTION: HOW CAN I LOAD WINDOWS XP ON TO MY NEW HARD
DRIVE USING THE PRODUCT KEY THAT CAME WITH MY COMPUTER
WITHOU BEING CHARGED AN ARM AND A LEG?

Thank you to anyone who responds.

Best Regards,

Eric

You won't have a problem - your product key will work
nicely with your new disk. And even if you did change
more than just the hard disk, you could make your case
to Microsoft that this was the same PC. No need to get
overly excited.

Deep Breath..
Better?

Now - as long as a restoration CD or full WIndows XP CD is in the picture
somewhere, you just load it.
Worst case you will have to CALL to activate your copy of XP. Explain to
them that you replaced the hard drive on your computer. You only replaced
one component here, this is not an issue.

(By the way - the all caps thing is NOT a great idea - it looks like you are
excited and screaming at us. We are here to help - reiterating "here",
because there is no need to yell.. We are in the same room.)

Hello Eric
You can change the harddrive as many times as need and reload the factory
restore disks, there will be no problem, the only problem that will accrue
will be if you change the motherboard.
Put the first disk in and restart the computer and it will walk you through
the restore process.

You'll have to contact HP to obtain an OEM installation CD. No
one else can help.

IF you do not have the CD Recovery Disk (with WinXP and other software
bundled this HP Pavilion computer)
that came with this computer (or was on a partition of the failed hard
drive) -- then contact HP to receive these.

Since you said you had the Fujitsu hard drive - this should streamline your
request with HP (if they have that info on file)

Recovering system w/o Windows on drive (Recovery Install on new hard drive)
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?product=62761&cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&docname=bph07145

Using the Recovery CD, you will need to enter the WinXP product key (bar
code and holograph sticker attached to side of your computer) OR
enclosed product keys for other bundled software products with the Recovery
diskettes

Technical support for HP Pavilion 7915

The process with HP is fairly straightforward - I ordered recovery CD for my
parent's PC (HP Pavilion) and
received recovery CDs within 2 days (great response time in my book)
