Use edit > paste special > html format > with the 'link' box checked. Any
changes you make in the sheet should be immediately transferred when both
the document and the sheet are open, or when the link is updated otherwise.

It isn't the answer unfortunately. I need to be able to manipulate the excel
spreadsheet within word so if I change numbers on page 1 the total filters
through to subsequent pages. I am not concerned about changing the formula in
excel and it reflecting in the spreadsheet in word. Hope you have the answer

Perhaps I spoke too soon, it does function the way you have said. Is there a
way to simplify so I can double click on the table one one page in word,
modify the number on that page and have the formulas filter through to
other pages, even though I have not opened the tables on the other pages.
No - it only works from Excel.. Another possibility is to paste as an Excel
Worksheet Object. Such objects will not span pages and so you would have to
paste manageable sized links. Double click the object to open Excel to make
your changes.
