I need advice on a windows backup utility

Hello,

I have a PC working under Windows XP Family Edition (2002) and an external
usb hard drive, on which I wish to automatically backup given folders and
files. Ideally, I would like a utility :
1) capable of making a differential copy (copy new or modified files)
2) offering a user friendly mecanism for handling the list of folders and
files I wish to backup
3) [less important] offering different ways of activation : automatic
(including awareness of when the external hard drive is connected) / manual,
....
What advice can you give me ?

A a bonus, I also would be interested in knowing how to ensure the
protection of the backup. Is it possible to protect an external hard drive
(LaCie 40 GB) with a password ? Are there backup utilities which encrypt at
the same time they copy ? Any other utility capable of crypting new /
modified data on the external hard drive ?

Give Cobian Backup a try. It's a very good program, with a lot of
features.
