I have a Win2K server running a few web and FTP sites. Recently, I needed
to add a new user, and opened the Active Directory Users and Computers
console.

In the listing, I have:
Active Directory Users and Computers [[email protected]]

and right underneath, there is:
abcde,net[]CNF:883a5774-ca6f-4c58-aa4a-d1bc21137cef

And I cannot add a user to the abcde.net domain.

(If I'm not mistaken, this used to (and should) read simply: abcde.net)

It would appear to me that somehow the active directory domain name has
either been changed (hacked?) or been corrupted. How do I go about
restoring the original name, and regaining the ability to manage users for
this machine?

Looks like a collision to me.

Likely not a virus or attack. Use adsiedit or ldp to clean it up.
