I hae Windows XP Home on 2 computers. I have a DSL modem connected to a
ruoter. Both computers are hard wired to the router. I have an issue that we
lose our internet connection frequently....

The modem DSL and Ethernet lights are on (active). The computer kows that
the cable is plugged or unpugged. BUT, 2 or 3 times a day the Internet
connection goes out (you can see that it is not receiving signal).I can
sometimes disable the enable the connection, and it'll work. Sometimes I can
repair the connection, and it'll work. Every few days I ahve to restore to a
point when it was woking and it works ok.

I borrowed another router and it worked fine at his house, but does the same
thing as the other one, for me....

HELP !

(I am using SP2)

Long post, strong desperation, few details.

What part of "the Internet connection" are you losing, i.e. computer-router,
router-modem, or modem-ISP?
Are both computers suffering the disconnection? Do you have current
antivirus software, make malware check and get firewall disabled?

Rich,

Where do you "see that it is not receiving signal"? At the computer, the
router, or the modem? Do both computers show the internet connection out at the
same time?

If disabling / enabling the connection, or repairing the connection, works, do
you have to do that to both computers?

Have you contacted your DSL supplier / ISP abut this?

You might try documenting the scope and frequency of the problem. I use
PingPlotter (free) from <http://www.pingplotter.com/>. If you set PingPlotter
to repeatedly ping a server on the internet, say a DNS server of your ISP, you
can get a precise log of when internet service drops out, and exactly what is
happening when you experience this problem.

i had that problem a couple of months ago. i called sympatico and it was
their end of the connection that got screwed over. it took a week and it
works fine.

I have a very similiar problem. I have a home network set up with 5 computers
on it.

2 XP Pro
2 XP Home
1 Win 98

I have a wireless Linksys Router. The computer (XP Pro) we use the most is a
wireless desktop next to the router. The way the router is physically
situated, the main computer must be a wireless connection. Several times a
day this computer kicks us off the internet. The only way to reconnect (or at
least the easiest) is to unplug the router and plug it back in again. I know
it's this computer that is doing it because it only happens when this
computer is on. If the computer is off, the other computers do just fine. For
some reason this computer locks up the router. I tried assigning IP Addresses
to each computer against their MAC addresses, thinking it may be an IP
issues, but that didn't seem to do anything.

Has anyone else experienced a similar problem? Does anyone have any
suggestions that I might be able to try?

Thank You!

I have a similar problem. 3 computers all running xp pro connected to linksys
wireless gateway/router. With only one pc running I get no problems, all 3
running the router drops out sometimes (at no specific interval as far as I
can make out).
Being a total novice I have no idea why but I have found that if you access
the router setup (i.e. 192.168.1.1) SETUP, DSL CONNECTION and click on
REFRESH the connection is remade. Sometimes the problem keeps occuring so I
have to leave it running in the background.

I have a very similar setup (with the same problem).
Being a novice, I have no idea why but have found that the following remakes
the connection for all pc's on the network:
Access Linksys router (i.e. 192.168.1.1)
Go to SETUP, DSL CONNECTION
Click on REFRESH and the connection is re-established. Sometimes I have to
leave this running in the background to stop the problem happening again. I
hope this is of some help.

Thanks for your help, though I was looking for a more permenant solution.
Does anyone know what might be causing the computer to be constantly losing
Internet connection? If this computer is off, all other computers stay
connected with no problems.

Thanks again.

Chris,

When "this computer kicks us off the internet", what is really happening? Is
the router locking up, causing the computers to lose contact with it, or is the
router locking up and losing connection with the internet? Do all computers
lose contact simultaneously? Are all computers connected wirelessly?

Do you use the same make and model network cards in each computer? Have you
updated the drivers on each? The router firmware?

Get a product like PingPlotter <http://www.pingplotter.com/>, install on each
computer, and set it up to ping say the DNS server of your ISP. When you lose
connectivity, see what link in the route is showing no response. Try and limit
the scope of the symptom.

Linksys routers have been known for locking up. I had a BEFSR41 that would lock
up several times weekly, finally Linksys replaced the power supply, and that was
it. No problems with it after that. I use a BEFSX41 as my primary router now,
and the BEFSR41 is a test router, but they're both rock solid now.

Is there anything that the wireless desktop is doing, when the router locks up,
that might point to the problem? What internet activities do you run from the
desktop, and from the other computers? What is there about the way the router
is physically situated that requires a wireless connection to the desktop?
