Keep losing internet connection

I recently had a Trojan horse Dialer.17.E on my Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop. I
have Windows XP Pro SP2. I had to repair my winsock settings in order to
connect through my dial-up. That now works fine. However, I also have a DSL
connection that now keeps losing connection to the internet every few
minutes. I have a brand new rj-45 cable which works perfectly well with my
desktop PC while connecting through DSL. I have reinstalled my ethernet
connection through Device Manager. I even went to 3com website and downloaded
the latest driver, but nothing helped. I have to unplug/plug my network cable
in order to connect to the internet every few minutes; just clicking on
repair will not work. I have run anti-virus programs, spyware removal and
programs to rid my computer of malware; my laptop is free of all viruses &
malware, but I'm still having the same problem. Any suggestions?
There are two other PC's using the same router that are working perfectly
fine.

XP disconnection issue

1. Try to disable autodisconnection feature first.
2. If disabling autoconnection doesn't fix the problem and other workstations don't have the same issue, check the hardware settings, for example, configure the computer' network cards for half duplex. Most Hubs don't support full duplex.

Kelly,
Is it possible that you didn't remove all the viruses and malware? Did you run
HijackThis and get expert help (IMHO an essential final step)?

If you did get expert help, can you post a link to the forum where your HJT Log
was dissected?

I have ZoneAlarm firewall installed on my laptop. I didn't have all of the
alerts enab led. When I turned all of the alerts on it showed that my laptop
was being blocked from accessing the DNS server, and the DNS server was being
blocked from accessing the Internet. When I added both to a trusted Zone, I
am no longer having any more problems. Sorry to bother you both. This might
help others that are having the same problem though.

Kelly,

Thanks for the update. The issue about the firewall needing to trust the DNS
server is good to remember.
