I hear error sounds when I shut down and my laptop

When my laptop goes to sleep (close the cover) and later when it wakes up, I
hear one or more of the Vista "error sounds" indicating that something went
wrong. Of course, they're not accompanied by any sort of error dialog so I
have no idea what could be causing them. I've looked at the event logs, but
it's hard to say which events could correspond to the sounds. This is not a
functional problem--the laptop continues to work--but it is definitely a
fit-and-finish issue and it's quite disconcerting.

Any advice for figuring out what might be causing them would be greatly
appreciated...

I'd go to the Sounds applet in Control Panel. Use the Sounds (TAB)
and from the Program window test the sounds to determine/match
what you hear with the system hibernating/waking up. If I had to guess
I would speculate it's the "Device Connect/Disconnect" sounds.

Yes, you're absolutely correct. I should have thought of that--I guess the
sound is more "urgent" sounding to me.

That being said, I don't have any USB devices or other peripherals attached,
what devices might be causing this? I don't want to turn the notifications
off, but it is *really* irritating.

Thanks!

Ryan

It's likely your Networking devices. My Sony Vaio notebook runs Vista
but I disable Sound Schemes, so I've not heard the notifications for the
connect/disconnect. Power savings and settings is moderately complicated
and is very vendor specific as to how it's setup and configured. I would
visit the Vendor's Forums and see if others have the same issue. Also, I
might lower the volume slider for system notifications so the sound remains
but plays at a lower level.
