I have a double desktop

I created a new profile on a W2K workstation and copied
the original desktop folder back into the Documents and
Setting folder under the user's name. Now when I boot the
system I get all icons 2x. If I try to delete one they
both get deleted and the shortcut no longer appears.

Try copying your desktop to the ALL USERS group and then delete your
profile and see how that works.
