I Had Avast now Avira Free... Cannot Download AV File Updates

Please ignore everything about this post...
Whoa!!!

Please clarify. Are you suggesting Bill is correct in saying
m$ should be trusted to provide and maintain good anti-virus
software, or are you agreeing with me that their history has
demonstrated, that they are not capable of doing so?

Also, Please trim articles you are replying to, to only the
parts you are replying to, and then add your responses to
after the parts you are replying to.

I'll chime in here. I took a brief look at some independent comparative
tests, which would conclude that MS Security Essentials Anti-Virus would
be adequate for most people's needs. No AV product is completely
effective without some common sense being used. Personally, I choose to
use NOD32 because I have used it for years and don't mind paying for it.
As for a firewall, the one included with Windows 7 does just fine
according to tests performed at Shields Up on the grc.com website. It's
fully stealth, and that's good enough for me.

If you're using a router, as many of us do, then Shields Up is testing
your router rather than your Windows firewall.

I am saying you appear to be a whacky nut-job that thinks MS is incapable of
having an AV product because of who they are.

And you just proved my point.

Hey pal I am the central scrutinizer not you OK. I'll tell you what
to trim and what not to trim. You dig?

And that matters how? Or are you just pointing out a detail or nit because
he
referenced the windows firewall when the action may well be going through
the router? Please point out one example where the windows firewall being
enabled was a problem in that it allowed inappropriate access.

Right -- zooms right over your head.

With a NAT router in place, the connection attempts from grc.com will
hit (and be stopped by) the router. They won't get as far as the
firewall, so the firewall becomes irrelevant in that case.

Your a new poster here. Every once in a while, some m$ paid patsy
shows up to claim their software is good, and I suspect you are
another silly m$ employee.

You're also obviously new to usenet

Eventually, I expect you'll learn to trim your articles, of you'll
find yourself plonked by all of the regular posters here.

M$ has purchased another anti virus application. I expect, within
a year or two, they will give up trying to maintain it, just like
they did before, with MSAV.

I've gotten so frustrated trying to maintain systems where the
fools who designed them made the mistake of using M$ software,
that, yes, I really dislike the company.

For you to call me an idiot for blaming m$ for producing crapware,
instead of good software, just shows who the real idiot is.

I find it amusing, that you are afraid to use your real name.

I'm laughing at your silly reply.

It's kind of like having an encrypted letter in a safe, and having
someone attempt to test the strength of the encryption. He walks in the
room, can't open the safe, and reports to you that he can't read the
letter - the conclusion that the encryption is strong at this point
would be erroneous.

Do not unzip or unpack the downloaded file. Start Avira and click on the
Update tab on top and then choose Manual.
A box will open up and just point it to where you saved that file. Then
select Open and it should update automatically.
Buffalo
PS: Do not unpack or unzip the downloaded file first.

Buffalo

Chose Manual Update(I downloaded the most current update of course),
Pressed Run and was told "VDF update file is corrupted. It will not be
installed"

I had downloaded several VDF updates in the past few days but only
tried to Manually run the most current one today (Wednesday).. I fear
the "corrupted" message to prevent even Manual Update is part of the
"thing's" infectious behavior.

Continued thanks and ongoing "ughs" Does this type of virus/trojan/
malware have an official viral name???? Thanks again folks.

Hmmmm.....

Other "things" are being downloaded successfully with this PC ?

Can you download something, anything, with a known MD5 value and then re-check its MD5
value once it has been downloaded ?

When I choose Manual and then get a choice to where the zip file is, I get a
choice to OPEN and not a choice to RUN.
Now I'm confused even more.
Buffalo
PS: Remember, do not try to unzip that file.
