When I try to access the microsoft websites from the tools
button I get This page can't be opened and at the bottom
it says Cannot find server or DNS Error
Internet Explorer. I have tried all the fixes discussed
else were in this group but none seem to work. I am
running windows 98 SE. Before I got my new seagate hard
drive IE6 worked great. It is only the Microsoft web sites
that I am having problems with. I can get windows up
dates going through the msn.com page but that is the only
microsoft link that will work besides support link under
update page. Any help would be great.

Thanks Bob

There is definitely something going on out there. Several people have
reported it here - myself included.

I have opened a ticket and Microsoft support but, so far, we haven't arrived
at a diagnosis or fix. Perhaps as more users are affected by this problem,
more effort will be put into finding the cause - so let's keep the posts
coming.

The workaround at the moment seems to be using Mozilla to access Microsoft
websites. It's free and it works but, of course, Mozilla is not ready to be
a default browser.

If I get anything conclusive from MS support, I will post it here.

(Actually Mozilla is pretty damn good, better in many ways than IE,
especially in its Firebird incarnation.)

Unfortunately this work-around is quite unsatisfactory: some parts of
www.microsoft.com require that IE be used (for example, setting up
ClearType); and some applications automatically go to www.microsoft.com (for
example, Word 2003 when seeking help).

There is another workaround: to go to www2.microsoft.akadns.net, which
would appear to be a cache of Microsoft's website: I have used it, for
example, to do IE-only functions.

Check for a file named HOSTS with no extension (not Hosts.sam). It may be a
hidden file. Open it with Notepad and remove any line referencing the site.
Or, rename HOSTS to OLDHOSTS
