I get no email notification in Outlook 2003

In Outlook XP I used to get a little envelope icon in the system tray when I
got new mail. Since installing Outlook 2003 all I get is the Outlook icon in
the system tray and no notification of new mail. In Advanced Email Options I
have all items checked under "When new items arrive in my inbox" but still no
notification.

Is something being delivered to the Inbox? (do not count things coming in
and being moved by rules to other folders or what gets nailed as junk
e-mail.)

If yes to the above, do you have any security software (antivirus, antispam)
installed that can scan your e-mail? If yes, what is it?

Yes, delivered to Inbox.

Yes I do have antivirus software scanning inbound mail. Avast v4.6.

hmm... i'm not familiar with Avast. Does the same behavior happen if Avast
is uninstalled (or e-mail scanning is disabled)? The reason that I ask is
that if Avast is setting up a temporary folder as the delivery location and
then moving the items to the Inbox. If this is the case, then you will
never receive a new message notification.

Not to highjack this thread however I am having the same problem. However I
do have rules to help sort my email to specific folders under my inbox when
they arrive and I do not get notified if a message is delivered directly to
one of these sub folders.

Example: I receive an email from John Doe I have a rule setup to move it to
the John Doe folder. Everything else is delivered to the Inbox folder if I
dont have a rule setup for moving the email. These are NOT offline folders,
just sub folders to my inbox.

I have checked my notifications settings and all are turned on. Email
notifications do work if everything is just delivered to my inbox and not
sorted out by my inbox rules.

I remember using Outlook from Office XP and had no problem with new email
notifications. Messages delivered played a the new mail notification and I
would get the little envelope in my taskbar even if they were messages that
were delivered to a sub-folder.

I am currently running a detect and repair on my office installation to see
if that will help.

Thanks.

Ash

My guess is that the New Mail icon is hidden. Right-click the System tray
and choose "Customize Notifications". Locate the "You have new unopened
items" icon and change the behavior to "Always show".

Hmmm very interesting. I don't have the "You have new unopened items" icon in
the Customize Notifications list. I wonder how I get it??

That's the icon Outlook uses. I can't explain why you don't see it. Are
there any icons, no matter what they're labeled, that look like the little
envelope?

Sorry, found it in the Past Items list. Set to "Always Show", but still
doesn't show.

Also, as previously mentioned I don't get any sound, the cursor does not
change and I don't get the Desktop Alert.

Hi Ash,

I get exactly the same. So far as I can tell, this is the way it's
supposed to work. Have you found a workaround for this yet?

cheers,
Matt

Has anybody figured out anything more with this? This sounds like the problem
I was having in Outlook 2002. It seemed like maybe it was blocking UDP but I
made a rule to allow that traffic through and it didn't solve anything. I
reinstalled and I uninstalled and then re-installed but nothing so far has
helped. I thought it could have been some crazy network monitoring program I
installed to test at some pont but now other users here are having the same
problem so that must not be the case. The only way I can get it to work is on
a machine that has been completely wiped with a fresh start. I looked for
preference files but didn't really have any luck with that avenue, but then
those files are hard to fine for me, at least.

Hi, I am having this issue too. And it started when I accidentaly right
clicked on the envelope and selected the only available option "don't show or
hide" I am not sure what it says as I did it accidentaly.

I had experienced this before, but as I did did format to my HD 2 months
ago, and did a fresh install, it was working again. As it has been said
before, a new install of Office doesn't solve it, a repair of Office doesn't
solve it, only a install after a format. Going to the properties and marking
"show always" doesn't work either.

My knowledge about systems is not big, but I would say this has something to
do with windows registry.

I would appreciate if someone could show us some light to get it working
again.

Thanks in advance,
Jaime

Sorry guys, I just found the way to solve it.

Inside Outlook, go to Tools ---> Options ---> in the preference tab (the
first one) choose: "options of email" ---> Advance email options ---> tick
the box "display an envelope icon in the notification area". Close all three
windows accepting, and fixed, the envelope will appear when ever you receive
new emails.

Names mentioned above might not be exact, as I translated it from my outlook
which I am using in Spanish language.

Cheers,
Jaime
