Notification envelope stopped displaying in OL 2007

I have been using Outlook 2007 for quite a while. Today I noticed that the
New Mail notification envelope is not displaying in the notification area
(i.e., there is no icon of an envelope that shows up in what I think is
called the system tray). I do get the popup window that gives me basic
information about new emails as they arrive (I get a little partially
transparent window in the system tray area telling me that I have an email
from a sender with part of the message visible). My settings in
Tools/Options/Email options/Advanced Email Options are already set to have
the icon display, and it used to; it just seems to have stopped. Is there a
way to get it to work again?

It must be hidden then. Press the "<" icon on your Notification Area to
expand the Notification Area to see it (of course you must just have
received an email for the envelope icon to actually show first).
