I Feel Like I'm Losing My Computer

Thanks for helping.

Ok, recently my computer has been acting very strange and it just seems as
if too many things are going wrong for them to be unrelated. I'll make a list
of what's happened so far (that i know of):

1. I bought a game and when i tried to run it, it said that my CPU was
negative and wouldnt run. I think this was because its quite an old game and
so it couldnt 'recognise' my speeds as they were too high. This one I'm not
too bothered about
2. Trying to activate an antivirus program it just kept on freezing. I did
solve this one and it was a firewall program but just adds to overall

3. For some reason Microsoft Word has gone AWOL. Whenever I try to start it
the little loading box with my license and all that comes up then nothing
happens. This worked perfectly in the past. I tried uninstalling all
Microsoft Works Suite programs and re-installing them but no luck.
4. In the same antivirus program above there are some problems. Firstly when
running Liveupdate to automatically find updates this just seems to do
nothing and freezes on this box saying 'Liveupdate will initialize in a few
moments.' Also when I try to run a system scan nothing happens as well, but
this time no box even starts.

5. When I either go to log off my user or turn off the computer it takes an
eternity.Normally after bout 5-10 mins I give up and press and hold power
button. I suspect this is to do with programs running in the background - and
I'vve notice this program called ccApp.exe that always asked whether I want
to end now when I log off. I tried this in the run menu both nothing
happened. I know that this is a regular problem with having too many programs
running at start-up but i've got rid of any i dont need and anyway start-up
is fine - its just logoff.

6. After some of these problems i came to the conclusion that i need to do
as system resore. However it wont let me. Evrytime I try ( no matter what
date i go back to) it restarts and then when I log back on it says it couldnt
restore to this date.

Thats all I can think of. As you problably saw my main problems are to do
with things just freezing. My only idea is that my problems are either caused
by the fact that I recently ( 2 months ago) got t'internet or that when I was
trying to get the game on no. 1 sorted I played around with quite a few
settings to get it to work.

Since I think the logoff thing is to do with programs i cant see I wanted to
do a screen print of task manager processes at time of typing ( with this
page, antivirus, media player and messenger running), but i'm not sure how to
post it - its in paint, so if you know how please tell

So, if you can help it'll be fantastic. I havent listed any hardware of my
computer but if there are things that would help any diagnosis please feel
free to ask. Thanks!!!!

ccapp.exe is part of Norton's anti virus. I too was having the same problems
you are having. I tried everything. I cleaned up my temp files, defrag my
computer and even use crapcleaner (find on the web, it's good) to get rid of
perhaps some files that we not there anymore -- leftovers),

I figured it's one big thing, internet explorer 7. As I had that program
installed. I uninstalled it and went back to ie 6. I'm going to wait til
microsoft releases an update for internet explorer and forget the tryouts.
This way the bugs should be out of it. I also uninstalled norton's anti
virus 2006 and now using on a try out basis another anti virus to see if I
like it.

Hope my message was useful. Take care

well one possible solution, and diagnosis, is Reinstalling windows.
That'll remove any malware or software conflicts.

If it works - great. And you know it was malware of software conflicts.

If it doesn't work then it's a hardware problem.

It's very common in computer diagnosis to diagnose things by trying
possible solutions.. Like a doctor tries different treatments. When
solutions don'[t work, it narrows it down. When a solution works, then
you usually know the cause or genreally, the area where the problem
lay.

Virus checkers aren't the be all and end all of diagnosis. I don't even
use one. When you have experience to know what not to do. Or if you
always do the same things with your computer, then you won't get a
virus, then you won't get one. I only use one if i'm very suspicious
of a virus being there. I'm not suggesting you do that. Just that your
view of diagnosis isn't very enlightened.

It's diagnosis by troubleshooting that you should get used to.
removing/Replacing/reinstalling bits of sofwtare, replacing bits of
hardware. does it work. does it not work. e.t.c.

If your problems statred when you got the itnernet, it's probably just
malware. Prior to reinstalling, and this would certainly be easier for
somebody with little experience.
Run a malware checker, here are a few

spyware and adware checkers
spybot, webroot spysweeper, adaware..

trojan scanner
"Trojan Remover"

I don't really use many of them. I had some good luck with webroot
spysweeper once.

And stop doing silly thingas that give you malware. IF you want to do
silly things with your browser, don't use intenet explorer. Use an
alternative like firefox.

ccApp.exe is associated with Norton AV. Start with removing it. Also
go to the Symantec website and use their removal tool. Install one of
the free AV programs to protect the system while you troubleshoot this.
There are good offerings from AVG and AVast.

I guess you have a very efficient doctor:

- applied med #1: kidney #1 dead. Problem "narrowed down" to next meds.
- applied med #2: heart #1 dead. Problem "narrowed down" to next meds.
- applied med #3: patient doesn't protest, may be med #3 is the solution.

For will-i-am-king's problem, I bear with you, unfortunately I don't see what to do or search; here I second q_q_anonymous is: may be you could uninstall your AV (antivirus) first (Disabling is not enough).

<EOJ> (End Of Joke)

fair joke, though in truth you're usually monitoring small side effects
not letting them develop. If a medicine were to cause damage quickly as
a side effect, then the doctor wouldn't be so liberal with it.

I have heard a computer technician try a solution to an "on and off"
problem or a problem where he didn't know the trigger. After applying
the possible solution, he said "keep an eye on it and see if the
problem persists".

Perhaps his parents always wanted him to become a doctor, and this is
how he comforts himself. But still, what he said was very appropriate.

By the way, for the OP, in my long post, I mentioned some names of of
programs to remove programs from startup..

There is the standard one built into Win XP, called msconfig

Others are-
Startup control panel,
autoruns,
codestuff starter

you might want to avoid autoruns, it's quite powerful and you may
deselect the wrong thing.

I haven't used any of them much.

You may try uninstalling the AV or other programs as was mentioned by
Michel Merlin.
If you think things aren't being removed from startup. I would broaden
that category containing AV. Some security programs, like 3rd party
firewalls or AV programs may keep coming back up if you use a mere
msconfig like program. So perhaps best to uninstall those.

After that, if things still don't work, it justifies a win xp
reinstall.

If it still fails,
then you start considering hardware. - or less likely, a corrupt
windows cd.
