I eventually get this error 0x8DDD0004 on the MS update page

C

Charles...

After waiting on the update page for it to check that I am running the
latest update version, I eventually get this error 0x8DDD0004

"[Error number: 0x8DDD0004]
The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are
trying to view. Take the following steps to try solving the problem:
a.. Refresh the page.
b.. In Internet Explorer, delete your Temporary Internet Files by going to
the Tools menu and clicking Internet Options.
c.. Close and then re-open Internet Explorer.
Internet Explorer (Add-ons Disabled) mode only prevents the use of ActiveX
controls, including those used by the Microsoft Update website. To get
updates using this browser mode, you need to turn on Automatic Updates on
your computer or visit the Windows Update website. "

I have tried all the obvious...

I suspect that this may be to do with activeX, maybe a corrupted activeX
file

auto-update appears to work, I can also manually update, I am running IE7,
its just the windows update site/page causing me grief

Can anyone confirm or help with a little advice please....

When accessing the Update site, you receive the 0x8ddd0004 error
http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/showarticle.aspx?articleid=36&ln=en&IsMu=False

Error that you see in the upper-right corner when you visit the Windows Update Web
site on a Windows XP-based computer: "[Error number: 0x8DDD0004]"
http://support.microsoft.com:80/kb/914224/en-us

or

1. Make sure you are logged in as an Administrator (if you are not the Administrator,
then log in as an Administrator and try Windows Update again).

2. Make sure your firewall is not blocking the Update site and check any pop up
stopper programs.

3. Now check in IE tools\manage add-ons (Win XP SP2 only) making sure that
WuWebControlClass is enabled. (Select "Add-ons that have been used by Internet
Explorer" in the "Show:" drop down list)

4. You may also wish to check c:\windows\Downloaded Program Files to see if anything
is corrupted there.

5. Make sure you accepted the Microsoft Trust Certificate
To turn on automatic updating of trusted root authority certificates
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/...oddocs/en-us/sag_cmautorootupdt.mspx?mfr=true

1. In Control Panel, open Add or Remove Programs
2. Click Add/Remove Windows Components.
3. Select the Update Root Certificates check box.
4. Click Next, and then click Finish.

Note
• To open Add/Remove Windows Components, click Start, click Control Panel, click Add
or Remove Programs, and then click Add/Remove Windows Components.

6. Check security settings, make sure they are not set too high

7. Delete cookies and temp files

8. Re-register these files, by clicking Start, Run and typing:-

REGSVR32 wuapi.dll
REGSVR32 wuaueng.dll
REGSVR32 atl.dll
REGSVR32 wucltui.dll
REGSVR32 wups.dll

You should receive a successful message after each one.
Try Windows Update Again.

If that hasn’t helped you may need to re-register some more files:-

net stop cryptsvc
regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 dssenh.dll
regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 sccbase.dll
net start cryptsvc

You should receive a successful message after each one.

C

Charles...

Thanks for the reply, I had already tried the first batch of solutions with
no joy....

but, I hadn't tried the "net stop cryptsvc" section though, alas, that
didn't work neither....

However, I did find another problem whilst checking, I went to 'user
accounts' in control panel & it failed...?
I got the error message "Wrong number of arguments or invalid property
assignment" instead...
Besides that, I done the rest... I am the admin though...

perhaps I have more interlinking probs than I had first thought.... :(

However, I did notice that WUWebControl Class wasn't in my add-on list
though, it is though on my other XP-pc

"3. Check WUWebControl Class in Internet Explorer (IE)
1. Open Internet Explorer (IE). Go to Tools -> Manage Add-ons
2. Select Add-ons that have been used by Internet Explorer (IE)
3. Check WUWebControl Class in the list. If it is disabled, please enable it
and click OK."

I have noticed many references to the "WuWebControlClass" Active X component.
Isn't this only present on systems that are using Windows Update? Users that
have opted to install Microsoft Update would have MuWebControlClass. I have
not seen ANY systems that are using Microsoft Update that have a
"WuWebControlClass" component. Do you think this may be an issue?
Thanks

Look at ad ons recently used.
If it's not there at all, it will reappear when you manually revisit WU. In
IE6 that is, not sure about IE7.

Hi, just found this post and found it very interesting as i experienced the
same problem. Then the admin account appeared to lose priviledges. Shortly
afterwards Windows XP crashed completely - wouldn't boot - so I reinstalled
the OS.
I strongly suspect an infection, despite a clean bill of health from Norton
360. I wonder how your computer is?
The people at Update Help where extremely useful!
