This is my problem and cannot find my way out of it__First time I have been
here __Please see if anyone can come up with an answer

I did something rather stupid today I have 2 HDD's 120Mb each and are set
asNFTS, the C:/ drive
carries the system XP2 and the D:/drive is used for backup and ghost
files__I started out to try to install Vista on the D:/ HDD and went into
administrative tools and clicked on the D:/ drive and made it : make
partition as active : now the computer will not boot unless I disable {pull
the plug} from the D:/ drive___what is happening is it is now trying to boot
up to the D:/ drive which has no System installed_______I have a smaller HDD
Samsung {fat} 20GB
and connected it up as normal and everything worked__there seems to have
been a few files installed onto the D:/ drv to make the drive partition
active_____so what can I do to format the D:/ drive or whatever to cure this
problem___I did a backup of the D:/ drive before I had this
trouble___________thanks for looking

one answer from a person on MS windowsxp.basics was this below
Will, you can get a Win98 bootdisk with fdisk on it and using fdisk set
the C:\ to Active. Reconnect the D: drive before
you start this and set the floppy as first boot device in the Bios.
Check here www.bootdisk.com
********************************************************************
my follow up as below
I have set the BIOS to boot a win 98 bootdisk___BUT If the 2 HDD's are
connected up as normal the boot sequence halts at the press Del window___If
I disconnect the D:/ drive it will boot up and I can use Fdisk but that is
no
use as it has to show both HDD's to get C:/ as an [The} active drive
Computer is usable when the D:/ HDDrv is unplugged

Actually installing any windows OS as xp or vista, you should install by
booting to
the installation cd,have all other hds,printers,network adapters,etc
unplugged.Also,
how in the world does one have 2 hds set as C: w/o a scsi or RAID set up,&
if that
were so,only one drive would be present in xp......At this point, boot to xp
cd,select
recovery,press enter for password,type:DiskPart In DiskPart,delete the
unwanted
partitions on any of the hds, create as needed, press ESC when thru, type:EXIT
From
that point, you could power off pc,plug in hd for vista only, boot to vista
cd,install as you
would xp,reconnect others after....

C:/ Drive Disconnected and the BIOS set to boot from XP CD___connected D:/
drive and boot up to XP disk but it all hangs at the Del Window___then I
disconnected the D:/ drive__reconnected the C:/ drive and the computer
booted up to the XP setup sequence_____there is no way of booting from the
D:/ drive its as if it is locked____Then I removed the D:/ drive and fitted
a Samsung 20 GB drive and started all over again by disconnecting the C:/
drive {which carries my XP OS} and booted up to the XP setup
sequence___seems as if I might have to get this D:/ drive {Seagate 120gb} in
another computer______I am still puzzled by this problem and hope somebody
can help

Should have been able to install Vista as a dual boot on D:drive without
changing anything.

You can try this:

Disconnect C: drive. Jumper D: as a Master and connect it as the only drive.
Boot from your XP or Vista CD and repartition the drive only. Don't make it
active, don't format or install an OS. Reconnect your drives as they were
before, don't forget to set the jumper back to what it originally was on D:.
The computer should now boot into XP again so format the D: drive
partition(s) as NTFS.

IIRC for the next part, with XP still running install Vista using its dual
boot options during setup. When the installation is complete, the boot menu
will probably default to Vista as the primary bootup OS but you can change
that to default to XP if you want.

Instead of using the XP disk, try using the Seagate drive utilities disk to
wipe and repartition the drive. Just to be safe I'd connect the problem
drive on its own. IINM Seagate has a bootable image file that you can
download and burn to CD. If not there are other harddrive partitioning
utilities out there that can be run from a boot diskette or CD.

TO all who have been so helpful___I have purchased a West Didg 160 Gb HDD
for $74 from www.msy.com.au fitted and partitioned and formatted__so no real
prob now Except that I have now a Seagate 120gb that will no doubt be
preserved for a while until I find more time to refit and try to
configure__have a feeling it is in the jumper area that one problem could
exist________as I said many thanks to all
