I can't send email!

hey, i registered a domain name on homestead.com with a matching email
account. i set up the email account to be directed to my outlook email
service on my laptop. i am able to receive emails, but when i send an email,
mcAfee pops up with this message:
"After you verify the format of your recipient addresses, McAfee recommends
that you resend those messages from your e-mail program. "

what does it mean!? and why aren't i able to send email?

Your first step should be to uninstall McAfee, since it is
incompatible with Windows Mail. After you have done that,
download and install the free Avast antivirus:
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
but be sure to configure it NOT to scan emails.

If you still get an error message after that, copy it and post it
into a reply here.

thanks for your help, gary! ..i uninstalled mcafee, installed avast, tried
to resend a test-email, and this is the error i got:

"The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be
correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this
problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail", and read the
"I'm having problems sending e-mail" section. If you need help determining
the proper server settings, please contact your e-mail service provider.

The rejected e-mail address was '(e-mail address removed)'. Subject 'asdf',
Account: 'mail.greencleeners.com', Server: 'smtp.greencleeners.com',
Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '554 <[email protected]>: Relay access
denied', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 554, Error Number:

Amanda, you ran into what is called a port 25 block.
It means you can only use the SMTP server of the provider who
provides your Internet connection at that moment.
Since Greencleaners.com is not your ISP, you can't use that
SMTP server. Let me know if you need a workaround.

Addendum: Greencleaners.com is hosted by Homestead, and I found
their explanation for the problem. (They agree with me.) :

Have you tried going to Tools/Accounts, highlight the account, then go to
Properties, Servers, and check the box that says, "My server requires
authentication"?

That worked for me.

Please don't try to offer suggestions unless you have expertise in this area.
It is rather obvious that you don't.

Not sure why you are suddenly bringing up "Outlook" since it was
not mentioned before. Did you mean to say Windows Mail?

Before I can give you some sound advice, I need answers to the
following:
Who provides your home Internet connection?
Does your MSN mail account only have have web access or
does it also have POP access?
Do you have any other mail accounts that have POP access?

A good place to start (when settings look OK) is...
which AV are you using?
Norton or McAfee by any chance?

G

Gary VanderMolen

In addition to what Julian said (uninstall incompatible antivirus programs),
double-check with your ISP as to whether the server requires SSL.
The error message below indicates that SSL is enabled, yet I can't find any
documentation that BellSouth requires it.
In Windows Mail, go to Tools, Accounts, select the 'Becky and Scott' account,
Properties, Advanced, under Outgoing Mail (SMTP) uncheck the box
"This server requires a secure connection (SSL)".
