I cant Record with my microfone

Well i just watned to use my mycrofone and for some reason i hear what i say , buy if i try to record anything im not able to do it , or using voice over programs ppl cant hear me either i tried many thins to do , off course my microfone sounds is on and not muted , but i just cant get it to record what i say , any idea or suggestion?

With SoundBlaster cards, double-click the speaker icon and click OPTIONS.
Click PROPERTIES and then the RECORD radio button. Be sure that the mic
channel has a checkmark in the SELECT box. Others cards may be similar.

I have an ESS ALEGRO suckky card but still , mic channel is checked , i tried more things and when i tried on voice and audio settings i did a test for hardware i got this msg cannot install directplay voice the code error is 0x80150175, i reinstalled dirextx and downlaoded newest one still not working , any else i could do? it worked on WINME but now on xp not working , thanks for the help given if u know anything else let me know .
