I can't open any word document, why are my files unavailable?

I have had a few virus problems since connecting to my university network. I
have fully updated my computer and installed all available virus protections.
The scans say that my computer is virus free. However, I cannot access any
word documents. When I open word a message box informs me that the file is
unavailable. Then I am asked if I want to save the file "normal" and another
box says that "changes have been made to the global template." This is
extremely worrying as I need word to write my thesis. I am worried that even
if I figure out how to fix the problem it will recur. I cannot afford to
spend any more time on this. Any advice would be appreciated.

If you're using Symantec/Norton AntiVirus, try disabling the
Office Plugin that comes with it. See
