I can't hear sound! Help!

I'm using a Realtek AC97 Audio device on my laptop, and sometime there's
sound, and sometimes not. When there's no sound, and i plug my headphones, i
hear very faint sound and static.

I have no idea what the problem could be.

Any suggestions?
