I can't create new emails in Outlook 2003

I am using Outlook2003, and I am not able to create a new email (eg using
File / New / Mail Message) as the option is greyed out. I also can't reply
to or forward existing emails I have received, as the buttons / options are
greyed out. Also Tools / Options and Customise are greyed out. In fact very
few menu items are not greyed out.
I have reinstalled Office twice and this has not solved the problem. I have
up to date anti virus and spyware protection, and scans reveal no infections.
The problem has arisen in the last 10 days - after I installed BT Openworld
online protection system - I have uninstalled this package and the problem
still exists.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to resolve the problem -
currently Outlook is effectively useless except as a mail reader.
Help please!

Does this apply to your other office apps? e.g. word
Seems similar to having an unregistered Office.
Isn't the BT protection sys simply a dialler protection? i.e. alerts you if
dialling a different connection?

Thanks very much for your comments / suggestion. I do have a similar problem
with creating new items in other office applications. I have reviewed a few
other discussion threads, and the problem seems to be with product activation.
I have a student and teacher edition, which allows installation on 3 home
pcs (clearly stated on the product box), and this pc is third on our family
network. I thought I had already activated it (but maybe I forgot - it seems
a long time agon now!). When I click on Activate Product in Help, absolutely
nothing happens - no wizard appears, no response at all.
I have tried deleting the opa11.dat file in Documents & Settings\All
users\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\Data - but again nothing happens.
I can't even try activating by phone, as all the help seems to suggest the
phone number is in the Activate product wizard - which I can't see - A real
Catch 22!

Any suggestions as to what to do next?

David
