I can't connect to BCM database engine

I've been using BCM and Outlook 2003 for months with no apparent problem.
This morning I started up and got a message saying "There was a problem
connecting to the database engine". If I ignore the message and try to open
the BCM folder I get the message "The set of folders could not be opened. The
server is not available"

I've followed the suggestions in the Help file about adding my user to the
BCM user group but this hasn't solved the problem.

I've searched for alternative suggestions on Help and online but can't find
anything.

can anyone please suggest a way forward

Can you please make sure that MSSQL$MicrosoftSmlBiz or MSSQL$MicrosoftBCM is
"Started"?

You can check this by clicking Start, choosing Run, typing "SERVICES.MSC"
and clicking OK.

If it's not running, try to start it. If it refuses to start, there are
plenty of SQL troubleshooting techniques we can try.

Stay with us and we'll have you back in BCM shortly. :)

Hi Leonid

Thanks for replying to my plea for help

I checked and MSSQL$MicrosoftBCM was there but not started. When I clicked
"start" I got the message "The MSSQL$MicrosoftBCM service on Local Computer
started and then stopped..."

Any more ideas to get BCM going again will be greatly received.

cheers

Hmm yes but not at 4:52am :)

The SQL error logs will tell us a lot and I can't even remember their exact
location for this instance at this hour. Don't worry, there are many ways to
bring those databases back online.

Did you make a backup of your BCM database?

I do have a BCM backup but I have to admit it's a few weeks old so I'd
prefer to avoid restoring from it and losing the recent changes if I can help
it :)

I appreciate your support, especially given that you are doing it in the
middle of the night! It's the middle of the working day here and I'm happy
to wait for any further suggestions until you have the time.

cheers

Hi Leonid

I found the error logs at
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL$MICROSOFTBCM\LOG

Here is an extract of one of the error logs:
2006-05-23 12:44:05.67 server Server Process ID is 2456.
2006-05-23 12:44:05.67 server Logging SQL Server messages in file

'normal'(2 CPUs detected).
2006-05-23 12:44:06.62 server SQL Server configured for thread mode
processing.
2006-05-23 12:44:06.63 server Using dynamic lock allocation. [500] Lock
Blocks, [1000] Lock Owner Blocks.

2006-05-23 12:44:07.10 spid3 Cannot recover the master database. Exiting.

Does this help at all?

cheers

I had this exact problem on 12/5/06. It was solved by Raul - you can read
the thread dated 12/5/06 and titled 'problem connecting to the database
engine'. Basically, I uninstalled/reinstalled bcm and reconnected to my
database. everything was restored to normal and no data was lost.

I'll go and reinstall BCM as you suggest.

Many thanks to Jaclyn, Raul & Leonid for taking the time to help out.

Hmm it does help.

We should backup the BCM database first. Hopefully that database is not
damaged and only master is.

My hunch is that a simple reinstall won't help in this case. It's a SQL
error and not a BCM error. That means that if the master error is fixed,
your data should be OK.

Just a final note to say that when i selected "use an existing database" at
the startup of the reinstalled BCM everything was recovered OK with no loss
of data - just as predicted by Jaclyn:)

once again, many thanks for taking the time to help me out
