I cannot uninstall any of the nvidia stuff!

hi all...

Yesterday, I got my "driver cleaner" ready, and my "nasty file killer"
ready, to remove the nvidia stuff in my files so that I could upgrade
my vidcard.
I recently found, in newegg.com, a seemingly good bargin on a Sapphire-
atlantis 9600xt 256
at-based card. I would hope that this card might be better than the
geforce fx 5200 that I have now, especially for Morrowind and
neverwinter 1.

I could not even get off of first base!

Each and every time that I tried to uninstall the nvidia, in the
programs add/remove, I would get a win98 error messege, to the effect
of..."illegal action shut down", of course there is no uninstall.

This "new" computer was recently fixed, due to the motherboard dying,
and the fixers placed a new windows install on my first hard drive and
the other stuff on the second hard drive.
Also there is no Nividia folder in the program folders either, they
just used an old card and used the drivers/panel. My registry
cleaner, with its uninstall section, when I try this, the same win98
error comes up.

I "hate' to have to try to manually uninstall all of the stuff in the
win sys files, by hand!
I, even though i could clean out the registry, would flinch at trying
to hand-remove all of the driver files, miss just one......!!

maybe i should just accept what i got! a trade off between a faily
stable card and this unknown.

How can I really uninstall this?!

thanks...freestone

Maybe you can try to reinstall the old driver files (over themselves)
for your old card and then try to uninstall again.....

If Craig's suggestion doesn't work, leave the nVidia driver remnants alone
and just install the ATi card and driver over them. Not the best practice,
but will be fine 7 out of 10 times.

Keep in mind some games will need to be reinstalled (or have their
autoconfig utilities re-run) to detect the new card properly. So if you see
some wierd behavior in games, don't automatically assume it's the driver.

Sounds like you haven't actually tried the "Driver Cleaner" program,
available at www.drivercleaner.net. There are some older free
versions that you find by searching around, or you can use the trial
period on the up-to-date program. Just follow the instructions and
select the drivers you want to remove. That might also remove the
native windows drivers for whatever you are uninstalling, but those
can be restored if need be, and aren't a huge loss.
