I cannot see any fonts or font sizes on the formatting toolbar

I have a tc4200 Tablet PC that is running Tablet XP and Office XP.
When using Powerpoint 2002 SP3 on my Tablet PC I cannot see any fonts or
font sizes on the formatting toolbar.

The fonts are there and can be used if you use the Format/Font from the
menu bar. Fonts and sizes are shown without problem on other Office XP
applications (Word & Excel).

I have uninstalled Office XP and reinstalled it. I have also re-applied
all of the patches +SP3. I have run the detect and repair. But the problem
remains the same all Office XP applications work OK and display fonts &
sizes in the formatting toolbar except for Powerpoint which shows lots of
blank lines.

I have been speaking to a colleague who has the same Tablet and the same
problem. He hasn't uninstalled yet but just did the detect & repair - he
still has exactly the same problem as me.

We are now both getting desparate - the work around is to use the menu bar
option to change font but its a pain so any other suggestions would be very
welcome.

Regards
L.

PS The Tablet PC Newsgroup don't know and suggest I post here !

Click Tools > Customize.
Click the Command tab.
In the left hand column, select format.
Find the Font Options (signified with an "A") in the right hand column
(these are the items you want to view on your tool bar, right?)
Holding down your Alt key, click on the first item then drag it to the Tool
Bar.
Release.
Repeat as needed.

I don't have an answer for you, but as a possible workaround, try this:

Start PPT
Choose Tools, Customize
Click the Options tab
Remove the checkmark next to "List font names in their font"
Click Close

Restart PPT and try the font list. Any help?

Unfortunately this made no difference whatsoever, still have exactly the same

Hi Sandy,

Sorry I think I misled you. I have the formatting option on the tool bar it
is when I try to use it there are no fonts displayed in it nor the font sizes
in the box to the right. All you see from the drop down list is blank lines
that you can cursor down.
Any ideas?

Do you have a *local* printer driver installed and set as the default printer?
If not, you should install one. PowerPoint gets a little nutso if you don't, and
font problems are main symptom.

Hi Steve,
Been there....have a local defailt printer - still the same problem.
However here's a little bit more of the puzzle....I also have installed a PDF
writer (as a printer) if I use this as the default when I go into Powerpoint
the fonts are displayed OK BUT when you cursor down the list they disappear
one by one never to reappear unless you change default printer and change
back again!!! :(
Just ti reiterate this problem is only with Powerpoint - Word & Excel work
perfectly showing fonts and sizes.

Kind of a bad idea, PDFWriter. Adobe doesn't ship it any longer and I don't think it
was really intended for use in anything past Win98 or maybe, just maybe Win2000.

But that raises another possibility; sometimes printer drivers get corrupted.
It'd be worth uninstalling and reinstalling your printer drivers. I'd do a reboot
before and another after and THEN fire up PPT.

Hi Steve,
May be not but its not an Adobe one anyhow, I have other printers local and
network same thing happens when you change printers you see the fonts until
you cusor through the list then they disappear and leave a blank list you can
scroll up and down. I have deleted then reinstalled all printers and
rebooted but the problem still occurs. My colleague has also done the same
without success. Is it just us or does anyone else have a simialer problem
with Tablet XP on a tc4200 using office XP only affecting Powerpoint?? Or
even better does anyone have the same setup that is working OK???

Thanks for your help %)

Hi Steve,

Ah, ok. See, PDFWriter is the name of a specific Adobe product, so that tossed me
off track. NBD, given the other info you've posted, it doesn't seem like it's the
issue anyhow.

I've got Office 2003 installed under WinXP/Tablet (a Fujitsu computer) and haven't
run into any similar problems. Anybody here use Office XP on a tablet? Please
stand up and wave your hands if so.

Hi Steve, as it is me and my colleague that are both using HP tablets that
have the problem and nobody has had a similar problem in the Tablet XP
discussion group nor this one we will pass it on to HP and see if they are
aware of any issues. I promise that if I get an answer I will come back and
post it here for other poor unexpecting HP users!!! cheers for your help so
far.......Kindest Regards L. ;)

Lorry,
If it is any consolation, I use a TC1000 and have not seen the problem you
describe. But, I only run Office 2003 on that machine. One thing to check:
Have you installed the latest video drivers HP has available?

Another thought: If you attach an external monitor and move the PPT window
to that monitor, does the problem still happen?

Thanks, Lorry. Please do that. Surely it'll help somebody else down the road.

Believe it or not but after many uninstalls and reinstalls of XP Pro and
Office XP in addition to upgrading the graphics driver (this caused a whole
host of other problems now thankfully rectified) and reinstalling all of my
printers and scanner the problem remains. Give up? not me! the saga
continues but with one noticeable improvement I can view the fonts & font
sizes in the drop down!
How? come I hear you ask......well...... after all the time I took in doing
the reinstalls and rebooting more time than I can remember I lost my temper
and clicked on the drop down box a dozen or so times and just like magic the
fonts appeared - I chose one and it worked, I cursored down the list and they
dissappeard - I doubled clicked on the drop down and they reappear, just like
magic. I didn't believe it so went to my colleague (who has the same tablet)
and just asked him to double click on the font drop down and yes it worked on
his pc as well. His jaw dropped open - I was happy that it wasn't me going
mad. So if you come across this problem just double click a few times on the
drop downs and the fonts/sizes get displayed.

It's not great but at least it is now possible to put a powerpoint
presentation together without a lot of messing about through the format menu.
We will now wait from the upgrade to Office 2003 and hope that the problem
goes away. In conclusion, "two wrongs don't make a right but three lefts
do".

Enjoy!

What a lunatic state of affairs! But good on ya for that workaround.

Hi guys,

I finally found the reason.
It is in fact a Microsoft Issue with the Tabtip.exe (TabletPC2005) in
conjunction with Powerpoint XP SP3.
Simply kill the Tabtip.exe in the Task Manager and the Toolbar will start to
work again.

The Issue is not related to any hardware. I was able to reproduce it on
several different Computers. Just install the following:

Windows XP Professional Tablet PC Edition 2005 (aka XP SP2)
English/Multilanguage
XP Multilanguage Pack German
XP Tablet MUI Pack
Office XP Prof. SP3
Office XP MUI Pack German

I don't currently know if this is somewhat related to the MUI Packs but this
set surely WILL produce the problem.
Also it doesn't help installing any further tablet PC addons. The Problem
persists as long as the "tabtip.exe" is running.

I will continue to search for an configuration problem in conjunction with
the tabtip panel but if anyone already has a real fix i would be somewhat
pleased.
I hope microsoft will fix that in future but i don't count on it since this
is the only article i found around the net related to this problem.

regards,
Mike

Hi and thanks for posting back with this.

One question for you:

What happens when you shut down and restart Windows, then start PPT immediately
(without killing tabtip.exe first)?

That might help distinguish between a conflict with tabtip.exe itself and a
problem that results from tabtip.exe tying up resources over time as it runs
(which was a problem with earlier versions; I though it was fixed now, though)
