I cannot open any of my files except through explorer

Please help. I cannot open any of my files bu using the usual method of
file/open and then selecting from the list of files. The onyl way that I
can open files now is to go into exploer and open from the listing there.
The problem is the same for word, Excel and Powerpoint. th dialogues box
comes up with a messgae saying programme not responding. Can any one help
me with this please?
