Please point me in the right direction as I can't figure out what my
Win XP SP2 is doing!

When I start my Win XP SP2 laptop, I wait for services to be
completely started (as always). After that I can hear HD run like
swapping.

Then I open task manager and can see:

1) CPU is 0% ..... 2%
2) Allocated memory is 600MB (physical RAM is 1GB)

Laptop is apparently doing nothing.

How can I do to debug this situation please?

Any help much appreciated.

Best regards.

Click the Processes tab in Task Manager and see what process is running with
any significant time %.

Process Explorer v11.04 (free) can tell you in a lot more detail what
is really going on in the background. Task Manager isn't all that
great at deciphering what's utilizing the system resources. It could
also be that your antivirus is scanning the disk?

I appreciate very much your answer ProcExp seems really cool and
complex...I'll try ASAP on client.

About Antivirus I think it should appear in procexp, doesn't it?

Regards.

Process Explorer is a bit more visual and descriptive than Task
Manager and not at all complex. You'll appreciate the detailed
information it will give you. And yes, if it is Antivirus just doing
it's thing, you'll see the correlation between explorer.exe (for disk
utilization) and the antivirus in terms of CPU usage and your disk
activity ligting up the night disk. Good luck.
