Hello,
I'll start out by outlining my problem and then get to my specific question.
My laptop runs Windows XP Pro and has an 80 GB Fujitsu HD (the computer is
an HP). Without going into the specifics of why, I will not have access to
the computer for about 2 months, but I do have the HD.
I have a backup computer that is a Dell desktop which runs Windows XP home
edition. I got my hands on a USB to IDE & SATA cable so i planned to simply
do a quick transfer of the files I needed.
Well, my frist issue was that I could not access the user folder from My
Documents and Settings/Username. I can acess the folders for the other user
name (which was set up to allow a friend to access email), but not from my
main one, which holds everything I need. I have the User Account password
protected, so I thought that may be part of the problem.
I did some digging on the net and found that I could switch ownership of the
files to gain access to them. I have read how to do this, and it seems
straightforward enough, but I am worried that there will be problems involved
when I get my laptop back.
If I change the ownership of these files, will I be able to easily change
them back again when I get my laptop back, or is there another way to access
them?
This is not a life or death situation with the files since my most important
ones are backed up, but a matter of convenience.
Thanks,
Robert Lindsay Stroud
