Periodic ticking of HD

I've a Compaq Presario with Win XP SP2, since I bought it (2 years ago) I
hear the HD ticking even in idle condition, namely somewhat like "ticktick",
then a pause of 5", then again "ticktick", summing up a cycle of 5
"tickticks" at an interval of 1'. I've controlled the processes running,
there are 36 of them (I never understand why they are so much, with Win98 I
saw only 2 but this is another matter) but there is NO CPU activity at all
and this worries me because it could be a hw problem, perhaps the HD heads
trying to recover some access problem. Nevertheless my HD reads and writes
correctly. What could it be?

"Ticktick" is usually a sign of a HD going
south/bad/tu/dead/crashing/down-the-tube/kerplunk, etcetera!

I would be thinking about backing up my data and considering the purchase of
a new HD.

Go to the harddrive manufacturers website, and download the free drive
utility offered to check the drives condition. Odds are it's on it's last
leg, and I would backup any important files, and start pricing new HD's.
