I cannot access or save files on a local drive in Word

toAt some point today, Microsoft Word stopped being able to open or save
files to a local disk. The file chooser opens but when I try to access a disk
it goes away with the egg timer on the screen. The program goes into a "not
responding" mode and the only way out seems to be to kill it. I can access a
file in Word by selecting it from explorer and using the associations but I
cannot save any changes. The same thing seems to be happening in all the
Office tools. I presume this is something to do with the common file dialog
but I have no idea of where to look or how to fix it. Wordpad seems to have
none of these problems...

You haven't made any attempt to search this newsgroup for answers to a
similar question, have you? This is definitely flavor of the week. See
"Problems in Windows Explorer or the Windows shell after you install

Hi Suzanne

Thanks for the fast response and my apologies for the delay in getting back
to you. Your information did the trick! I did spend some time searching for
an answer to my problem but I clearly did not look up the appropriate terms.
Anyhow I am back to normal now.

Thank you again

Dave

What I was referring to was the fact that a quick scan of recent posts in
the NG would have turned up many references to this problem. Most of those
immediately preceding yours referred to problems with Save and Save As
("save as causes program to not respond," "SAVE AS (NOT RESPONDING)," "When
I try to save a word file the program locks up", but that was one of your
problems, and an only slightly earlier post had the subject line "why can't
I open a word file from a folder." Every one of those questions had replies
(sometimes multiple replies) referencing the KB article.

Suzanne, thank you for the information you shared on this problem. I am not a
techie but I stumbled upon this discussion group and I was suffering with
this issue on 2 PC's here at home. I went to the security update and followed
the directions in the resolution and I'm fixed. Thank you for sharing.
