Just last night, I put my gmail account into Windows Mail so I can use it
that way. I followed instructions online as to how to do it, but am having
problems. I can receive mail no problem, but I can not send it. This is the
error message I am getting:

An unknown error has occurred. Subject 'NEW Email Address', Account:
'pop.gmail.com', Server: 'smtp.gmail.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 587,
Secure(SSL): Yes, Error Number: 0x800CCC0B

Now I am not a computer/internet savvy person by any means. I know just the
basics, so if anyone out there canhelp me out, I would really appreciate it!

Try changing the outgoing port number to 465?
Tools menu>accounts>select pop.gmail.com>properties>advanced tab.

You might read more of the gmail instructions, then see if any of them help.

They also offer an IMAP method of connecting, but I've tried to keep it
simple by assuming you'd rather use the POP method instead.

Also, some antivirus programs tend to cause assorted problems in
Windows Mail, although seldom immediately, so if you need more
help, tell us what if any antivirus programs you have.

You can't use SSL with port 587.
Either change that port to 465 and keep SSL (recommended), or
else keep 587 but disable SSL.
