I can receive email but cannot send it.

Microsoft doesn't provide support for Outlook 2002 anymore because it is
outside mainstream support (which for Office applications is around 5 years
after release).

The error indicates that you need to configure your account to use
authentication. You can do this in your account settings-> More Settings->
tab Outgoing Server

Outlook 2002 works on Windows Vista except for the fact that it won't
remember your account password when you restart Outlook.

I had the same problem, and this is how I solved it:

I learned that my ISP blocks all smtp servers except theirs. This is to
prevent spam. Once I entered their smtp information, I can now send and
receive no problem. You can still use Yahoo or any other email provider, and
when someone replies it goes to your yahoo, your mail is just sent with a
different server.

How did you find your 3rd party host. I am having the same problem.

Thanks Brian. You were right.

I was able to ping the server, but unable to telnet to it. So I looked up
my ISP -- not the company that hosts my mail, but the real ISP, the folks who
let the house connect to the internet -- and found that they don't allow
third parties (e.g. my mail host) to use port 25.

Why I'd been able to use port 25 before installing Office's Service Pack 3,
but not after, is a mystery. But it's an academic one: I found the login
and password for the ISP (something I've never used, since we're broadband),
and put those in my "outgoing/SMTP authentication" fields. Now my mail sends
fine, and it still looks like it's coming from my third-party server.

Thanks again.

a command line window and see if you can ping the SMTP server

C:\> ping yoursmtpserver

If you can do that, try telnetting to it:

C:\> telnet yoursmtpserver 25

If you get a response, enter QUIT. You've proven your PC can connect and I
don't have any suggestions at the moment, other than verifying your SMTP
settings. If you can't connect, contact your ISP. Perhaps they don't allow
port 25 connections and you have to use another port.

Talk to the people who run the server you've configured in Outlook as your
outgoing mail server to verify all your settings.

BeautyCochran,
550 Mailbox unavailable or access denied
This Error usually means that you are trying to connect to one ISP's
Outgoing Server, while connected to another ISP's service. If you are trying
to send mail out through your Comcast acct, while connected to another
service you need to change the Port Setting that OUTLOOK uses.

Since it appears that you are using Comcast. If it is another Mail
account/service that is causing you problems, please let us know, since
these setting may be different.

In Outlook 2003 (other versions may be slightly different)> TOOLS< E-mail
Accts> Select View or Change Accts> Select Comcast Acct> Press Change
button> Press More Settings button> Select Advance tab> for the Outgoing
Server Port, use "465" or "587" (w/o quotes). In Michigan, I have had
success with "465" (w/o quotes). Also make sure that you have Selected SSL
encryption for just the Outgoing server on this tab. You can leave the
Incoming Port at "110" (w/o quotes).

Also make sure on the Outgoing Server tab, that My server requires
authentication is also Selected. You may need to place the Mail Acct
UserID/Password Information in these boxes, if you use a SPAM removal
software.

Comcast has changed their ports in the last few days. Many are reporting the same issue. The new settings for Comcast is as follows

Outgoing Port 465, SSL enabled
Incoming Port 995, SSL enabled

You are responding to an ancient post! I tried executing the reference MID$,
but there is no such article on the 'msnews.microsoft.com' server! Only in
Google Groups, where I see the posting date, as shown in the attribution.

So, what is your exact error message?

I have had the same problems and Comcast has been no help at all. I am now
receiving but not sending. Any thoughts?

vince L.

i've had email problems with either comcast or outlook since yesterday
afternoon.
outlook is my default email handler - i have 2 email addresses through
comcast.net although indicate that test messages were successfully sent, i
occasionally receive a test message on outlook from one of the addresses, but
not from the other. when i open outlook express, a program which i haven't
used in months, the other test message is downloaded to that program!!!
the settings that my test messages are "successfully" sent on are the old
comcast ones - 110 and 25. i changed them to the ones indicated here - 995 -
465 and get an error message -
those settings are the ones that gmail uses - another properly configured
email address that i have on outlook, which now doesn't appear on outlook
despite the fact that the test message indicates that it was successfully
sent - i do get the message directly on gmail, but not in outlook!!
complete frustration.

If the error message you posted is accurate, you've misspelled the server
name. It should be 'smtp.mail.yahoo.co.uk', not 'smpt.mail.yahoo.co.uk'.
Email servers aren't smart enough to see you've transposed the "p" and "t"
in the server name.

I had the same problem and it took me two months to get the answer.

My situation was:
I have Outlook set up to use with two e-mail accounts. One could send and
receive and one would only receive. The problem was my old ISP (Att.com) ,
the account that would only receive. My new ISP is a cable provider and I
found out that they use different ports to send and receive than the ATT DSL
account.

My solution was to get a Gmail (or any other) account, add it to Outlook and
be able to receive from the old account and send from the new account until I
was able to convert all my business to the Gmail.
