I am trying to install a Brother MFC-490cw all in 1 printer

The printer installation hangs on a Files Needed (File name is non english
characters) in c:\windows\ServicePackFiles

2nd level Brother support tells me the built in printer driver file is
corrupted and needs replacing

How do I do That

Usually a driver install CD is out-of-date by the time you purchase the
device. I would go to Brother's web site and download the most recent
driver package and use that instead of the CD. Also when choosing a
download there are usually two offerings - just a driver and the driver &
all kinds of support software (System Tray icon....) I generally prefer to
only install the driver and leave out all the "Extras".

For removal, 1st use the printers applet to delete the printer if it
appears
in the list. Secondly, go through Add/Remove programs in Control Panel
and look for any Brother entries. If found, click Uninstall.

The Brother MFC-490CW does not have a built-in driver in XP. The
printer is "newer" than the XP install "files" so there would not be a
possible "driver" file delivered with XP.

How are you connecting the printer?

Did you follow the install process: start the CD before connecting the
printer??
