I can get my new XP Home PC to see any network, HELP!!

Hello all,

I am not completely new to this but I am new to this
problem. I have been trying to get my new XP Home PC to
join my home workgroup with no luck. I have tried using
the "Setup a home or small office" wizard and also tried
changing the workgroup by right mouse clicking my
computer, going to system properties and clicking the
change button on the "computer name" Tab to change the
workgroup manually.

No matter what I do I continue to get the following error
when I click on "view workgroup members":

"MSHOME is not accessible. You might not have
permissions to use this network resource. Contact the
administrator of this server to find out if you have
access permissions. The list of servers for this
workgroup is not currently available."

Let me start by saying this is the same error everytime
except of course the workgroup name changes as I try
different workgroup names. I am also working on this
workstation with full Administrative rights.

I was under the impression that I should at least see my
own computer name in the workgroup list even if I was not
physically connected to the network but this is not the
case. I get the above error no matter what config I am
in. I have also tried to reset the tcpip Stack by using
the "netsh interface ip reset c:\reset.txt" command found
on the Microsoft support site. It reset IP ok but still
no luck.

Does anyone know if there is a know issue with trying to
network Windows XP Home edition? If there is, is there a
fix for it or am I just out of luck?

Thanks to all in advance,

Jeff

Sage Advice

Amongst other things you will need the same workgroup name
on each PC in the network, you wil need to turn off XP's
firewall, and you will need each PC in the network to have
an IP address in the same subnet (usually the fitrst three
groups of digits identical on each PC and the subnet mask
as 255.255.255.0. Run IPCONFIG from a DOS window on each
PC and see what the IP addresses are.

To see the PC you are sitting at it will need to be
a "server" which means having File and Print Sharing
turned on.
