XP Cannot See home network

Hello Everyone.

I have attempted to set up a home network.

I have a desktop PC that has XP and is hooked to the internet via a linksys
router.
I have a new laptop with VISTA.
I have run the network wizards and set up the router online.

both PCs can successfully access the internet.

When I view the map on the vista laptop, the lap top sees the network with
my desk top included in the map.

when I try to view the workgroup computers on my XP desktop, I get the error
message,
"xxxx network is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this
network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to see if you
have access permissions.
The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available."

I have viewed a knowledge base article
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318030/en-us
and done the actions listed, but it still doesn't work.

I have purchased the following books
"windows Vista - The missing Manual"
and
"Home Networking for Dummies"
and have been reading them and trying to debug this.

I am thinking that I am close, but I just can't get this thing set up right.

Does anyone have any suggestions on my next steps to take?

I would appreciate any help that you could offer.

thanks so much!

I would check the firewall first. If turn off the firewall, can you ping by
IP? Or this troubleshooting may help,
