I butchered my registry....help me

I am not sure when or certainly not why..but I made some changes that have
rendered my *.exe's inoperative.
Get this...mostly just the software that was installed by me OTHER than
from Zip's or CD rom or whathave you...but msi installer works as well as my
controll panel software.
I cant system restore it because I have no restore points because I am a
fool and with urging from a computer whiz that I need to disable restore
function for smoother and more accurate multitracking. I use my computer for
this function primarily.
I am very very grateful, in advance to anyone who does'nt make me feel too
bad.idiotic and can offer me a solution. And now for the BEST news...I
already tried to reinstall XP home and it cimpleted the setup rather quickly
only to find the filesystem only slightly better than before.
PLease be a pal and help me...

stay out of the registry...even the pros get scared in there...sure hope you
learned your lesson...
