I am Unable to View my Pictures on my computer

I have a lot of pictures and i wanted to send one to a friend but i need to
see them so that i know which ones i want to send him. I tried assigning a
specific program to view the pictures but its still not working. How do i
fix this?

Right-click on a picture and place your cursor over 'Open With'. Select
'Choose Program...' and choose the program you wish to view the picture.
Place a checkmark in 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of
file'. All pictures with the same file extension will open in your chosen
program.

I Have 1.8 G of pic's in my pictures but are unable to open them any
sugestions
