I am ready to order a new computer with: AMD Athlon 64 x2 6000+ cpu / 512mb
256bit GDDR3 PCI express crossfire suppport video card / 4Gb DDR2 Dual
Channel Ram. Gaming / Home Video main uses. Will XP professional work ok,
or bite the bullit and go with Vista? Any input appreciated, Thanks!

If it's for gaming purposes I'd go with XP, but I'm sure plenty of people
would disagree with me.

From what I've read XP gives better performance for gaming (for the time
being, at least). I'd imagine you'll also get much better compatibility with
XP.

For now I'd stay with XPsp2/3

Once sp1 is out for Vista it may be better...
also once most of the games go to DX-10 Vista *might* be the way to go...
but that day may be a while yet (if ever???)

At this moment in time until it is definitely known what computer/OS to
buy, the route with the most options is a high-end, high-power XP/SP2-3
system. There isn't going to be a dearth of drivers for its peripherals
whilst a system designed and built from the outset to run Vista might
not be able to be downgraded to run with Windows XP.

For gaming *or for anything* I recommend XP instead of Vista. Many apps are
not yet Vista-compatible and Vista crashes far more than XP.

And, in case you value your data, NTBACKUP (included) works under XP, but
Vista's built-in backup is a restrictive and useless mess.

If you plan to power this computer up, log in, and actually use it, go for
XP Pro. If you want something to keep the office door from blowing shut, get
Vista.

I'm not putting Vista on any of my clients' networks until forced to at
gunpoint - it's just dreadful.
