hyperthreading

I dont have a hardware problem but Idont know which group to ask, but
Im sure someone will advise. I run sisoft on my system and it tells me
that Hyperthreading is not properly installed. Im useing a p4 3.2ghz
with hypertheading. Ive read through several posts that say to check
device manager and bios. Bios is enabled for hyperthreading, and in
device manager the computer shows as ACPI Multiprocessor. Im using xp
home which from what Ive read supports hyperthreading. Ive been
searching for a solution and the only ones I can find refer to either
bios or device manager not showing correct details. Also in system
info and task manager only one cpu shows. Can anybody through some
light on this. As I say its not causing any conflict issues just
annoying to have something and not use it. Thanks in advance
Regards Robert

Robert;

You may wish to reconsider what you are wanting to do. 95% of the
software that is available today is *NOT* hyperthreading aware. If you
enable hyperthreading, your computer will actually take a 10-15% performance
decrease, because there is not "traffic cop" to control data on the dual
pipelines. Only software that is HT aware can regulate traffic in a manner
that will increase the throughput. Gateway, Dell and many other OEM's ship
their HT capable systems with HT disabled for this reason. HT was and still
is mostly vaporware that the marketing folks put a spin on to get consumers
to part with a few more dollars.

Do yourself a favor, and if HT is not enabled, don't go through the
hassle of enabling it.

Has it occurred to you to disbelieve Sisoft? That would be my first
(and probably final) thought. As a final check, look in Task Manager,
Performance page to see if you get two lines in the CPU Usage graph
