Hyperthreading Crash

I am running XP home edition on a Dell Dimension 3.06 gig with
hyper-threading. To cut a long story short when I enable hyper-threading I
get the blue screen of death after everything has loaded, this tells me to
uninstall hardware or software. There are no conflicts listed in device
manager but it does seem connected with something which utilises the sys
tray. I notice that sometimes the crash occurs if I try to disable my Linksys
USB Ethernet adapter connected to my ADSL router. Having said that it seems
to happen without any interference from me. I wonder if anyone has come
across a similar problem, I have tried other forums and no one has heard of
this problem.

Did you have hyperthreading enabled when you installed Windows?

Just flipping it on and off will cause unpredictable results.

No I inherited the machine which is only a year old and had a faulty hard
drive. I had problems getting the bios to find the DVD drive or the hard
drive and on the suggestion of Dell I reset the bios. When I did this I did
not know that it defaulted to 'single processor' status. I am taking it that
installing windows under these circumstances could cause a problem. If this
is the case do you think a repair installation may be called for.
