I have copied a map onto my page and on that put added stars to represent the
places written below the map - I have tried to hyperlink them to the page as
an addition to the hyperlink on the written part below the map but the
hyperlink on the stars won't work - can I not hyperlink a graphic which is on
top of another image?

What you want to do is create an image map. When you click once on the
image the picture toolbar should appear at the bottom. If it doesn't go to
View, Toolbars, Picture. On the toolbar (far right) you'll see shapes like
rectangles etc. Click one of them to create a "hotspot". Draw the hotspot
around the part of the image (the star) that you want to hyperlink. When
you stop drawing the Create Hyperlink pop up will appear and you can enter
the hyperlink. Do this for all the spots on the map that you want people to
click on.
