,How do I overlay GIFs on a BMP image and retain relative position... as I
am trying to create a map on my web site showing locations as stars, each
with hyperlinks to web sites. Thanks for any help.

..bmp's won't display on the web.

create the stars right on a jpg...simplest way. then make the stars
hotspots.

Actually, .bmp files can be displayed on the web, IE has done this for
years. The big problem with bmp files is they are uncompressed , unlike
jpeg's which are a compressed file format, and end up being hugely inflated
files.

they seem to want to display in Paint though, not IE or FF.

Thank you both for replying.

The issue that I am getting is that teh jpegs that I am using shift down the
page when viewed against the bmp background. They look to be fine in FP when
placing them but not when previewed.

Any further thoughts?

Rob - thanks - this is the answer maybe. Ignore my previous response. I
will try this first. Cheers.

In "theory" they should display in just about anything.
..bmp is the basic display medium in a GUI in any system I can think of.

Example: all icons / toolbar icons in all "windows" programs, IE, FP, OE,
Office etc
are actually displayed in .bmp format.
Even the animations that display in pop up dialogs when moving / deleting
files,
sending / receiving email animations are .bmp frames in avi files.

I guess the BMP I viewed in NS was my imagination.

Tom,

I am not talking about the browser!

I am talking about the Operating System (Windows, Unix, Linux, Apple, OS2, Be, Palm, Sun, etc.).
Since Windows support BMP, then any application running under Windows should be able to handle the
bmp image file format, if designed to do so.

Andrew Murray

I suggest you make your map with the stars marked on it in the first place -
in your image editor. Then save as a JPG and insert in your web. Then make
the hotspot links.

If you're thinking of using layers/absolute positition to put the 'overlay'
image on the map I think you'll run into trouble.

Or, if you make the map a "background" image, and then you can place the
star.gif image on that, and make hyperlinks to them.
